Discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, penicillin revolutionized medicine by providing the first effective treatment against bacterial infections. Discovery: Alexander Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, discovered penicillin in 1928 while studying Staphylococcus bacteria. He noticed that a mold, Penicillium notatum , had contaminated one of his petri dishes and inhibited bacterial growth around it. Development: Fleming's discovery didn't lead directly to the widespread use of penicillin. It was further developed by Howard Florey, Ernst Boris Chain, and their team at the University of Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s. Follow our blog on  Instagram China’s patent and trademark office has upheld a key patent within the portfolio of CRISPR/Cas9 intellectual property belonging to Nobel Laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier, The Regents of the University of California, and University of Vienna (known collectively as CVC), and licensed for commercial use through ERS Genomics. Dublin-based ERS Genomics said the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) has upheld Patent No. CN201380038920.6, “Methods and Compositions for RNA-guided Target DNA Modification and for RNA-guided Transcription Regulation”. It was developed by John Hinton and Jane Muller in 1941. The composition of Muller-Hinton agar is optimized to provide a uniform medium for bacterial growth and to allow accurate antibiotic susceptibility testing. It typically contains beef infusion, casein hydrolysate, and starch, along with agar as a solidifying agent. Importantly, the medium has a low content of calcium and magnesium ions, which can interfere with the action of certain antibiotics. One of the key features of Muller-Hinton agar is its pH level, which is maintained around 7.2-7.4. This pH range is ideal for the growth of most bacteria and ensures consistent results in susceptibility testing.
