Why Biochemistry is important to Biotechnology?

Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes taking place within living organisms, biotechnology is the ultimate product of these discoveries, allowing the identified biochemical processes to be exploited for technological purposes, or better observed and analyzed in situ using biotechnical means.
Imagine you discover a micro-organism which have the ability to decay polyvinyl chloride (PVC). You reckon that this organism would be extremely helpful in Bioremediation. Now, you isolate a colony of micro-organism and study every aspect of the organism, their activities, structures, behaviour and how they affect every aspect of our lives; which is known as Microbiology. A branch of science that deals with the study of microorganisms.

Similarly, you do a much more deeper research, invest some time into the micro-organism and study the biochemical processes. After some years that Eureka moment arrives & you discover the pathways involving the conversion of the PVC. You discover some enzymes and proteins are involved in the whole conversion cycle. This, whole study of the chemical and physico-chemical processes of the Micro-organism is known as Biochemistry.

Some years later, you realise that the conversion rate of PVC is much more slower. You decide to make the process much more faster & efficient. Now, you identify some key enzymes which are responsible for the conversion of PVC and alter the gene which now will now code for a protein which makes the whole conversion rate faster and the M.O much more efficient. This whole process of exploitation of organisms intended to improve or make something much more efficient with the aid of other field of science is termed as Biotechnology.

So, Biotechnology is any technological application that makes use of biological systems, living organisms and its components to create products and other technological systems with the aim of advancing the human condition with the help of various field of science (Botany, Microbiology, Virology, Biochemistry, Zoology, Molecular biology etc
