WHAT IS CACTUS LEATHER?
Leather is widely used in almost every industry and most importantly in the fashion arena.  When it comes to leather, just two choices are there: either reach for a petroleum-based “pleather” garment that would pollute the planet, or wear the skin of a tortured, violently killed animal... and still pollute the planet. As choices go, this one wasn't a winner. These days, the term “leather” has come to encompass creations made from pineapples, mushrooms, corkapplesgrapes, mangoes and cactus.

HISTORY OF CACTUS LEATHER
Desserto is a brand which brought to the world the new vegan leather from the cactus plant. It was first discovered in 2019. It has already won an Internationally recognised award. The founders and innovators Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez beat more than 1,400 nominees from 52 countries to win the VII International Green Product Award in Munich, Germany.

HOW IS THE CACTUS LEATHER MADE?
The following are the steps involved in the production of cactus leather:
1. Harvesting
2. Cleaning and Drying
3. Resin creation
4. Coating

The process for cactus leather involves using either the new young leaves or the mature leaves of the plant. In the case of Desserto (It is the brand name given to the cactus leather), they use the young leaves from the prickly pear cactus.  These leaves are harvested from organically grown cactus plants, cleaned, mashed, and left in the sun to dry for three days before processing. The mature leaves are cut and used without damaging the plant. This enables repeat harvest every 6-8 months from the same plants.
(What is the prickly pear cactus???
The prickly pear, also called nopal, is a flat-stemmed spiny cacti mostly found in warm, dry climates. It prefers sandy and rocky conditions and requires very little water to grow. In fact, watering is only necessary once every two to three weeks during the hot and dry summer months. The cactus fruit, sometimes called a "Prickly Pears" can also be eaten. They are very sweet and can be eaten raw, right off of the plant. The fruit of this cactus is said to have many nutritional and health benefits.)

PROS OF CACTUS LEATHER
  • It is 100% organic vegan leather.
  • It is superior to animal leather as it is cruelty-free!
  • It is highly sustainable.
  • It takes approximately 3 leaves of cactus to make 1 linear meter of Cactus leather. It takes just 200 litres of water to grow 1 kg of cactus biomass. This water is absorbed by the plants naturally from humidity present in the atmosphere.
  • The longevity of cactus leather is around 10 years.
  • It is highly durable and resistant to water, abrasion, rubbing, and tearing.
  • It is a lightweight leather.
  • Its carbon emission rate is low.
CONS OF CACTUS LEATHER
Cactus leather is a material which is really new to the market and therefore flaws are not exactly discovered, the following can be some possible reasons for cactus leather not to be a preferable choice:
  • Limited availability
  • High cost
  • Durability and longevity
  • Environmental impact
  • Water-intensive initial growth
