INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT KOMODO DRAGON

(POINT WISE)

  1. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest lizard, with a mass up to 90 kg and a length of 3 m. It is restricted to 4 small islands(Komodo, Rinca, Gili motang and Gili Dasami) in Eastern Indonesia
  2. The Komodo dragon is also sometimes known as the Komodo monitor or the Komodo Island monitor in scientific literature, although these names are uncommon. To the natives of Komodo dragon, it is referred to as orabuaya darat ('land crocodile'), or biawak raksasa ('giant monitor').
  3. Although previous studies proposed that Komodo dragon saliva contains a variety of highly septic bacteria that would help to bring down prey, research in 2013 suggested that the bacteria in the mouths of Komodo dragons are ordinary and similar to those found in other carnivores. Komodo dragons have good mouth hygiene. To quote Bryan Fry: "After they are done feeding, they will spend 10 to 15 minutes lip-licking and rubbing their head in the leaves to clean their mouth ... Unlike people have been led to believe, they do not have chunks of rotting flesh from their meals on their teeth, cultivating bacteria." Nor do Komodo dragons wait for prey to die and track it at a distance, as vipers do; observations of them hunting deer, boar and in some cases buffalo reveal that they kill prey in less than half an hour.
  4. The saliva of Komodo Dragon has 65 types of bacteria which is harmful for the prey that it attacks
  5. The reproduction is asexual and it is done by Parthenogenesis- A reproductive strategy that involves development of a female (rarely a male) gamete (sex cell) without fertilization.

VENOM EXPERIMENT:-

Requirements:-

Komodo's venom, Blood

Experiment:-

1. Take two test tubes (one with water and the other with venom)
2. Add same ratio of blood to both the test tubes
3. Wait for 20 minutes.
Result:-
The blood in water gets clotted after 20 minutes bit not in the sample contains venom. That's exactly what would happen to a prey animal which continues to bleed due to the loss of its ability for blood clot.

Scientists still researching about this venom and its effects, but the result is that it forms a great impact in the future biotech industries.
